What do individuals who undertake solo whitewater kayaking perceive to gain from the experience?

Abstract: Whitewater kayaking is a continuingly growing and developing sport. One growing aspect of this is the area of solo whitewater kayaking. At present this is little understood and researched and is often misunderstood by the larger paddle sports community. The primary aim of this dissertation is to explore the key benefits of undertaking solo whitewater kayaking expeditions. Secondly this dissertation will aim to explore the concept of spirituality and its place within paddle sports. Two expert solo whitewater kayakers where chosen through the use of a purposive sample. The participants then completed a semi-structured interview based on a recent solo experience, (sub 24 hours) open ended questions where used to create a rich depth of data that would then be analyzed through IPA analysis. how are you feeling?

I have been sitting on this post for around a week now deciding whether or not I felt happy talking so openly about what I have been feeling over the last month. Right now I am feeling pretty good, so it’s as good a time as any to talk about this… It’s been over a month now since I have arrived in India and it’s fair to say that I have already had my fair share of adventures. However running parallel to the thrill of new experiences is an undertone of missingness and at times some very low emotions. Travelling to a country like India is always billed to be a life changing experience that is one constant journey of discovery and personal development. It is sold as a package must for any young “traveler” along with destinations like Thailand, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Uganda, Tanzania, Peru and other “Gap year” Hotspots. Delhi Belly...

Delhi Belly. The last thing every person said before saying goodbye was to enjoy the shits... Now to be honest I think i have lasted longer that I initially thought, 4 days clear and still going strong!! the bets are still on as to who gets it first (probably Fil.) Fingers crossed and with the help of some special ayurvedic orange pills we may just survive... Now the toilet talk is out of the way... I'm going to find it really hard to talk about what I have been up to over the last 4 days in Delhi. Because in a sense I have done nothing... I went to work, the market, traveled on the underground, slept, ate and did some yoga. In most other countries this would be nothing special to write home about.
