Over my last 5 months in India, I've been trying hard to pick up as much Hindi as possible. Last week I came across a word that perhaps I have been searching for for quite a longtime.
jugaad is a colloquial word in Hindi, Punjabi and Bengali. It's meaning is very much dependant on the situation but it is refer to creative solutions to problems, cheap work arounds and new simple inventions. Solutions that bend the rules!
One of my favourite phrases in India is that "it just works." I believe jugaad plays a big part in this. Whatever the problem, Indians have a solution that is often cheap, simple and effective. Yet I wouldn't have thought of in a million years.
So today I had a scroll through my photos to see what examples of jugaad I could find. As a small tribute to Indian creativity and ingenuity.
